CALL FOR ENTRIES! Dear Brattle friends and artists: We invite you to submit your entries to the fifth annual ART HOUSE silent art auction and fundraiser, to be held Sunday, September 28, 2008, to benefit the Brattle Film Foundation! Since 1953, the Brattle Theatre in Harvard Square has been a cultural landmark, both locally and nationally, as one of the first and best-known art house repertory cinemas in this country, presenting classic and current film from around the world. The Brattle Film Foundation, established in 2000 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, now programs and operates the theatre. We are working to preserve the Brattle Theatre’s acclaimed film programming and expand educational programming and community events, at the only remaining independent and nonprofit movie theatre in
Cambridge. But the theatre’s future depends on support from the public, since ticket sales do not cover our expenses. We thank those of you who have participated in ART HOUSE in the past, helping to make this one of our biggest annual fundraising events. Your participation helps secure the Brattle’s future! Last year, over 70 artists contributed pieces to the auction. As in years past, this event will aim to introduce the community to the rich array of work created by local artists, with beginning bids for many pieces set low enough to give novice collectors the opportunity to purchase quality original art. The event will again include food donated by local restaurants and a cash bar. Participating artists:

Donate works of art with a market value of no more than $750, offering beginning collectors the opportunity to purchase great art
May receive 25% of the final sale price of their donated work, OR

may opt to donate 100% of the proceeds to the Brattle Film Foundation.(Your 100% donation helps the Brattle maximize funds raised!)

Receive 6 free movie passes to the Brattle Theatre (a $57 value)
Receive free admission to the event (a $15 value)
Receive recognition in our promotions for helping sustain the historic Brattle Theatre (priceless!)

ART HOUSE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

All submissions must be received by Friday, August 15th
Artists may submit up to six works (but no more than two per artist will be accepted for auction)
Works in all media are eligible
All works must be the original creations of the submitting artist
Two-dimensional work must be framed and ready to hang, OR

matted with attached wire or hanger, ready to be hung from hook

Three-dimensional work must include detailed set-up / installation instructions
A digital image must be included for each submitted piece. Image must conform to the following: High-Quality JPG (minimal compression); 7 inches in longest dimension; 150 dpi.

If accepted, these images will be used in Art House promotional materials, both in print and on Brattlefilm.org website Notification and delivery: Artists will be notified whether works are accepted for auction by email on August 22nd. All works accepted must be delivered to the Brattle Theatre by Friday, September 5th. Artists will be notified by email of any unsold work within 48 hours following the event. Unsold work will be available for pickup the week following the event. Insurance: Artwork will be covered by the theatre’s general liability insurance for 1/2 market value while in our possession. The Brattle Film Foundation is not responsible for damage in transit to or from theatre.

Submitting your work: Entries will be accepted by mail and email, and all entries must include a submission form and image for each individual piece. All submissions must be received or postmarked by Friday, August 15th. Late or incomplete submissions will not be accepted. Linoleum Block Printing

Sarah will demonstrate block relief printmaking- including transfering the drawing, cutting the block, and printing single and multiple registrations

Mat Cutting
with Edward Dormody
Thursday July 10th 6:00-8:00

Ed will show you how to cut your own mats and assemble framed work for presentation. This is a great money saver for artists who need to frame their own work for presentation.

The Utrecht Cambridge Plein Air Excursion: Part 1
with Douglas Cushing
Saturday July 12th 11:00am-5:00pm

This is an open invitation to meet and paint with other artists out in the open air. We will be meeting at the store and leaving at 11:00 am- walking down to the river and setting up to paint for the day. We will bring a cooler of water- you bring your paints, yourself, and your friends. (any media you want) (no rain day in case of inclement weather)

Have you always been interested in watercolor but a little intimidated by it? We will cover the basics of materials and techniques to make watercolor easy and approachable.

Transfer Techniques

Ed will be demonstrating several techniques for transfering images including xylene and acrylic polymer transfers- useful for transfering drawings to printmaking blocks, paper and canvas, and for creating objects for inclusion in collage.

It has long been a standard practice in archeological reconstruction to use a differentiated material in replacing lost portions of the original construction/artwork. This artist in italy takes that a little further in a wonderfully playful manner- which a suprisingly enjoyable aesthetic outcome:

We will be running another demonstration on stretching, priming, and the application of an imprimatura Saturday, May 24th.

Also, be on the lookout for our upcoming summer demos- plein aire painting, mat cutting, and we will be taking an excursion or 2 out to go painting as a group in the field… and anyone who wants to come and meet other painters will be invited!
