Upcoming Open Studios

Cambridge and our surounding neighbors have a number of Open Studios taking place during the warmer weather months.  We encourage you to take a stroll to view the works of our local artists and support the community.  Also, please look for our coupon in the Cambridge Open Studio guide.  Here is a schedule of the events:

Miller St Open Studios (Somerville): April 24-25, Fri 6-10, Sat 12-5

Cambridge Open Studios - North/West: April 25-26, Sat/Sun Noon-6

West Medford Open Studios: April 25-26, Sat/Sun Noon-5

Somerville Open Studios: May 2-3, Sat/Sun Noon-6

Saturday March 28th- Oil Mediums with Douglas Cushing

See how to make several popular mediums and control qualities such as viscosity, sheen, dry time, and brush drag. Also sample several mass manufactured oil mediums for comparison.

Saturday April 11th-  Faux Gilding an Antiquing with Edward Dormody

See how to easily create surfaces mimicking that of leaf gilded and patined finishes using oils, acrylics, and gesso ground. Bring old life to new objects!

Saturday April 25th-  2-Color Multi-Registration Screenprinting with Sarah Morrison

See how to create 2- color Posters a la mode de 60s and subsequent rock posters.

Saturday May 9th – The Bound Portfolio with Douglas Cushing

Learn how to make an organized yet unique portfolio experience with your work utilizing some of the basic techniques from bookmaking for binding and box/ slipcase making.

Saturday June 6th-  Canvas Stretching and Priming with Douglas Cushing

Learn how to stretch and  prime your own painting surface. Preparation will include affixing the linen to the stretchers, sizing and priming with and oil ground, and the application of an imprimatura to provide a medium value/ neutral toned working surface (which will also reproduce the sought after color of the raw linen- while providing a proper surface for the adhesion of the paint itself, and the isolation of the fibers from the oil)

Saturday July 11th- Color Theory in Paint with Douglas Cushing

Learn basic color theory and mixing practices for painting. We will explore hue, value, chroma, saturation, as well as paint qualities such as transparency/opacity,tintorial strength, and mass tone/transparency tone and hue.

Sunday  July 26th- Beginning to Approach the Painted Portrait with Jeffrey Petrishen

Explore aspects of the human portrait as Jeffrey guides you through establishing the basic forms in paint-  understand mass and linear description, figure-ground relationship, and mixing of  color for the description of skin tones in and out of shadow.
